In this time of increased national and international discord, First United Methodist Church of Elmhurst is planning an event, free and open to the community, celebrating and calling for peace and unity. The event, “A Celebration of Peace,” will be held on Saturday, October 7, from 1:00-4:00 p.m. Music, prayer, speakers, food, activities for children and adults, and commentary from public officials are being planned. First United Methodist Church is located at 232 South York St, directly south of downtown Elmhurst.
Ten years ago, the church erected a Peace Pole on its southeast lawn. Peace Poles originated in Japan and are recognized as the most prominent international symbol and monument to peace. Peace Poles bear the message “May Peace Prevail On Earth” in the languages of the world. It is estimated that more than 200,000 Peace Poles have been dedicated in nearly every country on Earth.
To rededicate the Peace Pole, the church is preparing an event to bring together people of all ages, interests, faiths and backgrounds to celebrate serving, creating and manifesting true peace on earth while transcending our differences and celebrating our common humanity.
Preparations and scheduling are now underway. The church is planning on hosting participants from our various social justice partners, as well as local and state public officials. Information and updates will be published on the church’s website at umcelmhurst.org.
All are welcome and invited to attend this celebration.
