Silent prayer session
September 13, 2016 @ 10:00 am - 10:20 am
Contemplative Prayer in Sanctuary Beginning September 13
On Tuesday mornings, “Come by yourselves to a secluded place and rest for a while.” (Mark 6:31)
Jesus frequently called his disciples into prayer in secluded or deserted places. The desert or wilderness provides physical space to be free of the distractions of the lives we have created: work, family, school, community etc., and attend to the life God has created for us.
Silent or contemplative prayer is the backbone of Christian prayer. Rev. Daniel Wolpert has this to say about the work of silence: “[It] is the work of gently saying ‘no’ to the endless stream of thoughts and feelings that make up our world in order to listen for and say ‘yes’ to the thoughts and feelings that are the voice of God.” (Creating a Life with God)
Beginning September 13 at 10am, I invite the congregation and staff to join me in silent prayer in the sanctuary for 20 minutes. Please come in comfortable clothing. You may want to bring a sentence of scripture to pray (i.e. “Be still and know that I am God”, Psalm 46:10), one of the Ten Commandments, or a Beatitude. Recently, I have been praying a section of the Sermon on the Mount for a half hour each day.
If you are unable to join us in the sanctuary, try to set aside some time from 10-10:20 to be in silence with us on Tuesday mornings. Don’t worry about completing the whole 20 minutes. Instead, set your cell phone timer for 5 minutes and practice silence for that period.
I pray that you will join me in this great work of attending to the Holy One.— Pastor Joe
